What is a sinus infection?

Sinus infections, also medically known as sinusitis occur when you have an infection in your nasal cavities. This infection causes your sinuses to become swollen, inflamed and causes painful facial pressure. Sinusitis or chronic sinusitis can be caused by a virus, fungi or your unique anatomical structure. Sinus infections are especially prevalent during this time of year when seasonal pollen counts are at their highest levels. If you are suffering, you’re not alone.

How can I avoid another sinus infection during this time of year?

Here are a couple of tips to fight against a sinus infection, especially during this time of the year:

  • If you’re a smoker, you need to stop! As we know, smoking is already a bad habit but it can be even worse on your sinuses, due to the fact that the smoke weakens the natural bacteria in your sinuses. This can cause the membrane of your sinus wall to become inflamed and result in infection.
  • The occasional drink is understandable after a long day at the office. But try to stay away from a lot of alcohol consumption, as it can have the same effects that smoking has on your sinuses.
  • Help break up the mucus with a saline spray to allow your sinuses to naturally drain on their own. Saline sprays can help to avoid a blockage of bacteria and fungi which can lead to sinus further sinus infections.
  • Use a humidifier or steam from a hot shower to add a little moisture to your sinuses which can help you breathe more easily.
